DIAmond Devices Enabled Metrology and Sensing

DIADEMS is an Integrated Project (IP) funded by the European Commission, under the ICT theme of the Seventh Framework Programme.
DIADEMS aims at exploiting the unique physical properties of NV colour centres in ultrapure single-crystal CVD-grown diamond to develop innovative devices with unprecedented performances for ICT applications. NV colour centres are solid-state atom-like structures with spin-dependent optical transitions. This makes them ideal candidates to build high-sensitivity atomic-scale magnetometers.

The objectives of DIADEMS are to develop :

  • Wide field magnetic imagers with 1 nT sensivities,
  • Scanning probe magnetometer with sensitivity 10 nT and spatial resolution 10 nm,
  • Sensor heads with resolution 1 pT.


DIADEMS aims at integrating the efforts of the European Community on NV centres to push further the limits of this promising technology and to keep Europe's prominent position.

The DIADEMS consortium consists of 15 partners from 5 EU countries and 2 associated countries. It has been set up with the purpose of gathering the key scientists in the field in Europe to :

  • Reinforce cooperation between the teams to achieve breakthrough results
  • Identify new fields of applications and trends
  • Build a critical mass of European researchers to stay a major player in this emerging area together with their colleagues and competitors outside Europe.
